'Chanda Means Moon' was painted in memory of my dear friend Michael Chanda. I met Michael at a July 4th party in NY. We quickly became friends, sharing stories and smoking cigars all afternoon. Michael's parents were immigrants from Poland. He was a self-made millionaire designing and making hats for the elite in the 40's and 50's in NYC. He retired at the age of 40 and spent the rest of his life, into his 80's, making art. He would greet me in a sequin vest, changing out hats, and performing light shows for the city in his penthouse apt.
